What is an SRO?

A police officer that serves in public schools by providing prevention, intervention, and and safety to all students and staff members.  The SRO works cooperatively with school administration.

Responsibilities:

·     Help to keep a Safe learning environment for all participants in the educational process.

·   Build relationships with students, parents, and school officials to provide a partnership with the Pottstown Police Department.

·   Teach students conflict resolution, personal safety, and civil responsibility. 

Programs led by the SRO: 

·       Peer Mediation

·   A group of students that are trained to resolve and mediate conflicts between other students. 

·       Student Safety Council

·   Students who take a proactive approach to providing for the safety of the building. 

·   These students also participate and serve as leaders on the Attendance Review Board.  A board of students, teachers, and administrators who create strategies to increase student attendance. 

Special Programs:       

·      DUI Bug

·   Attendance Improvement

·   PTSA  (Parent, Teacher, Student Association)

·   Presentation on “Children and Drugs”

·   I’MPACT (I’M Pottstown Action Community Team)

·   A team of teachers, administrators, and the SRO visit students’ homes to reward them for achievement in attendance, academics, and citizenship. 

History:     

The position of SRO has been at Pottstown High School for the past nine years.  The Pottstown Police Department and the Pottstown School District created one of the first partnerships between police departments and school districts.  Now, several schools have SRO’s and some have modeled their SRO program after the Pottstown model.
