STREET LEVEL DRUG ENFORCEMENT STRATEGY IS WORKING
Pottstown Police Chief Mark Flanders credits the continuing partnership between the Pottstown Police Department and the Montgomery County District Attorney's Office and a new street level enforcement initiative with numerous arrests, the reduction of available drugs, and with aggressive enforcement activity - a reduction of the number of calls involving firearms and drug dealers in 2004.
Using a new strategy, beginning in May of last year the Pottstown Police Department, in partnership with members of the Montgomery County District Attorney's Narcotics Enforcement Team (NET), embarked on a effort to attack drug dealers at the street level. Though there has always been a strong cooperative effort between agencies, prior to this endeavor most street level enforcement was done strictly by Pottstown Police Officers and members of the DA's Countywide Drug Task Force. Traditionally, the DA's NET focused on long-term investigations involving mid to upper level drug dealers, deferring to local law enforcement at the street level.
As a result of this partnership strategy, between May and December of 2004 there were more than seventy-five (75) arrests made in the Borough for drug possession and/or trafficking. There are still more than fifteen (15) active undercover investigations underway and more than twenty (20) arrest warrants for suspects who have not yet been located. Additionally, the efforts of this strategy resulted in the identification of a corrupt organization and the ultimate arrest of "Lady Zeigler" and numerous members of her organization. Additionally, as a result of the arrests police have seized several vehicles, drugs, drug paraphernalia, weapons, and an excess of $20,000 in US Currency.
Chief Flanders offered his praise for the efforts of the officers and detective involved in making the new strategy work. He further indicated that, "Without the dedication of District Attorney Bruce Castor and his continual fulfillment of his pledge to help to improve the quality of life for Pottstown residents, we would not have been as successful in 2004." Chief Flanders feels confident that, "As we move into 2005, Pottstown residents can look forward to continued efforts in drug and other crime eradication with even better results."
Below is a list of the names of several of the individuals who have been arrested as a result of this new strategy. In addition to the below individuals, six (6) juveniles were arrested - Two (2) from Philadelphia, one (1) from Norristown, and three 93) from Pottstown.
