In the Spring of 2003, the Post purchased two new Raleigh Mountain Bikes for use on patrol. After becoming a member of the Post, each new member is instructed by a member of the Police Bike Patrol Unit on proper bike riding techniques as well as safety precautions. Explorers successfully passing tests on the basics of bike riding are permitted to ride during events.

Both Explorer bikes are fully equipped mountain bikes. The 21 speeds, front suspension, and thick tires make manuerving through any situation quite easy, just as any biker would desire. The bikes are also equipped with front and rear lights, a bag to carry any extra equipment to and from events, a water bottle holder, as well as a spare tire pump.

At left: Bike 31 fully equipped and ready to go in front of the Smith Family Plaza.

Explorers trained in bike patrol often ride as part of community events. They are able to move easily from one place to another safely while performing their duties. Some Explorers also ride bikes along side Pottstown Police Officers during these large community events. No Explorer is mandated to ride in the Bike Unit, but doing so allows for another unprecedented learning experience unique to our organization.
