PPD MEMBERS PARTICIPATE IN ANTI-BIAS TRAINING

On June 8th all members of the Pottstown Police Department, both sworn and civilian, participated in one of two four-hour Anti-Bias Training sessions at Borough Hall.  The sessions, titled A Workplace of Difference™ For The Law Enforcement Community, was presented by instructors from the Anti-Defamation League® (ADL) - World of Difference Institute.

The training sessions encouraged members to turn knowledge into useable skills for serving our diverse community.  This was accomplished by: Exploring the idea of culture and how we perceive the cultures of others; Examining the stereotypes and cultural assumptions held by our community; Examining the ways that members perceive others, others perceive them, and how this impacts our effectiveness, and; Examining how diversity skills directly affect officer safety work, including the members relationship to our diverse community. (ADL - 2005)

Additionally, members learned about the mission of the ADL and their Law Enforcement Initiative, which is designed to: Strengthen the ability of police to combat hate groups, extremism, and hate crimes; Protect citizens from hate crimes, assist victims and bring perpetrators to justice; Enhance the ability of law enforcement personnel to work with a diverse and pluralistic society, and; Strengthen ADL and law enforcement partnerships.  As part of the initiative, members were invited to utilize the ADL's Law Enforcement Agency Resource Network (LEARN) - a "one stop shopping" web page for current and archival material on extremism and hate motivated behavior. (ADL - 2005)

PPD HOSTS SEMINAR

On June 22nd most of our officers, officers from seven (7) other departments, and several Goodwill Fire Co. tactical medics, participated in a Liability/Risk Management seminar at the Ringing Hill Fire Co.  The purpose of the seminar was to provide officers with the most up-to-date case law and operational designed to protect themselves, the Department, and our community from liability issues.

The presenter was David MacMain, Esq., a litigation partner at Montgomery, McKracken, Walker, and Rhoads, LLP.  Mr. MacMain, a former Pennsylvania State Trooper, is nationally recognized as an expert in municipal law and civil rights.  He has represented many municipalities and public bodies and their officials in a wide variety of civil rights claims including police misconduct, zoning/land use, and licensing, First Amendment, prison-based and work-place claims. He also serves as counsel to law enforcement agencies on police-related issues including the review and preparation of policies such as high-speed pursuit and use of force.
